Why Merit Alone Isn't Enough for Promotions

A recent coaching client, J (name withheld for privacy), sparked a fascinating question: is technical skill enough for career advancement? J consistently delivered top performance (KPIs, talent pool selection), yet promotions eluded him. While his expertise was undeniable, something was missing.

Just be your Authentic self to connect with the people that matter

J's story resonated with some of the people I know. Many high-potential individuals struggle with visibility. Here's the good news: executive presence isn't a mysterious quality anymore. I like to share 5 key trends redefining it:

  1. Authenticity is King: Ditch the stiffness! People crave genuine connections. Bring your true self, showcase your passion, and connect on a human level. Authenticity builds trust and ‘connection’ with people.

  2. Storytelling is Your Superpower: Data is important, but compelling narratives are what move people. Can you transform dry facts into engaging stories that resonate? Mastering storytelling makes you a captivating personality.

  3. Embrace Your Purpose: What ignites you? People want leaders who inspire with a strong sense of purpose. However small or big that purpose is, does not matter. Find your "why" and let it fuel your actions. Sharing your purpose authentically attracts and motivates other successful people who want you on board with them.

  4. Vulnerability is Strength: Self-doubt is human. Don't try to be a robot. Be humble. Be human. Be yourself with your weaknesses too. Share setbacks you overcame and lessons learned. This relatable transparency fosters trust and connection.

  5. Being current is the New Hustle:   Be curious, explore new ideas, and constantly seek challenges in every aspect of your life – both work and personal. This growth mindset keeps you sharp and at the forefront. What people need to see is the image and the essence of someone who is this lifelong evolving and changing persona.

These trends aren't about downplaying your technical abilities, but about empowering your authentic self and unlocking your true nature – get them to want you more than you want them. That’s my motto.

Have you faced similar Visibility challenges? What are your thoughts on these trends? I would love to hear anyone else’s experience.
